Emotional Eating Used to Own me

How I stopped emotional eating...

This is definitely something that used to be a common recurring theme in my life, and it can be really hard to break this cycle when it’s been your coping mechanism for so long when emotions like stress or sadness resurface.

Even today, when I was feeling under the weather, the temptation to eat for comfort and ‘zone out’ was 100x more appealing than sitting in those yucky emotions and facing them.

But, after sitting with them and talking to my partner, the logical brain (your higher self) kicks in and knocks some sense into you.

A few tools I use now whenever I get the urge to eat my feelings are...

🏄‍♀️ Surfing the urge.

Waiting 10-15 mins and distracting myself, so that the rational mind kicks in and reminds me that it’s not actually what I really want.

🕯️ Treating myself to a hot magnesium bath with some scented candles (you could use lush products and put on a YouTube video too)

✍️ Journaling how you’re feeling, get down into the nitty gritty and pour yourself out into that journal.

🧘 Meditate for 10 mins (self love meditation).

📞 Talking with my partner, family or a close friend.

❤️ Cuddling a pillow or your dog and watching your favourite Netflix series or YouTube guru.

Because if every time we give into our feelings and emotions with food, we become a slave to them. The key is to do anything that allows you to pause and respond rather than react.

The problem will also still be there afterwards, but paired with a less than desirable body composition.

If you are struggling with emotional eating, you’re not alone - again, we’re all human! But when I broke the cycle of this and found healthier replacements it allowed me to move forward and be at peace with food again.

If you're struggling with emotional eating, I'd love to chat with you and dive into some of the issues that might be preventing you from getting the body you want, just click here.
