Should I fuel training differently in a strength block versus a hypertrophy block?
Strength and hypertrophy blocks demand different things from the body. Whether that means your nutrition needs to look different is a question worth asking.
We asked the MAP coaching team to share how each of them thinks through it.

One might think the nutrition demands vary a lot between strength and hypertrophy blocks, but they are quite similar. Protein and fats will likely stay the same between the two, but carbs may vary slightly.
Hypertrophy blocks have a much higher metabolic demand, and the goal is to add tissue, so we may bias toward a higher-calorie, carb-heavy approach here. The conventional thought then would be that carbs and calories should be lower during a strength block because total volume is lower, but the reality is that the duration of each session will tend to be longer, so carbs need to be abundant to prevent CNS fatigue - remember that carbs are the main fuel source of the brain, and strength is primarily a neurological adaptation.
The variance will likely be in total calories. I tend to bias weight maintenance in a strength block to prevent changes in body composition to alter leverages on the main lifts.
Regardless, in both scenarios, we need adequate carbs and high-quality nutrition to ensure we're getting a ton of micronutrients into the system.

Fueling doesn't fundamentally change between a strength and hypertrophy block because both rely heavily on carbohydrates to fuel high-intensity anaerobic work. The main difference comes down to total training volume and recovery demand.
Hypertrophy blocks typically involve more total sets, reps, and metabolic stress, which increases glycogen use and muscle damage. Carbohydrate intake often needs to be slightly higher in this phase, and protein can sit toward the upper end of the range, around 1 to 1.2 grams per pound, to support muscle repair and growth.
In a lower-volume strength block, glycogen depletion and muscle damage are typically reduced, so total carbs may not need to be as high and protein can sit comfortably in the mid-range, around 0.7 to 1 gram per pound, since the emphasis shifts from building new tissue to expressing strength.
Overall calories and recovery capacity are the bigger levers here rather than dramatic macro changes.

In a strength block, carbs help you hit heavy lifts with quality. In a hypertrophy block, total calories and protein matter a bit more to support recovery from the higher volume of sets and reps.
Protein stays important across both phases and the overall goal remains the same: fuel performance and give your body what it needs to recover.

The short answer: probably not as much as you might think.
The fundamentals stay the same: adequate energy, protein, carbohydrates, and overall nutrition to support training and recovery. The biggest difference is usually how much carbohydrate you need around training.
Hypertrophy blocks often involve more total volume, so you may benefit from slightly more carbohydrate overall and/or more carbs around your sessions for recovery purposes going into the next training day. Strength blocks tend to have lower volume but higher intensity – you still want sufficient carbs to support performance as well as facilitating good recovery.
And importantly, the goal of the block matters too. If you're trying to gain muscle, a small calorie surplus makes sense regardless of whether you're lifting for strength or hypertrophy. If you're maintaining or losing weight, you can adjust calories accordingly while keeping protein high.
So I'd think about it less as "strength nutrition vs. hypertrophy nutrition" and more as matching your nutrition to training volume, performance demands, and your current goal.

In a hypertrophy block, total sets and reps are higher, which drives up overall recovery demand and glycogen use. That's where total calories and carbohydrate intake often need to increase, and protein can sit toward the higher end of the range to support repair and growth.
The simple rule is to keep protein steady across both phases and adjust carbohydrates and total intake based on training volume and how well you're recovering.

Ideally fueling doesn't change unless there is a genuine demand for more food, whether that's a need for more energy to support training performance or to improve recovery.
For athletes who compete in both bodybuilding and powerlifting, food stays consistent across blocks unless the goal is an active growth phase or a fat loss phase. Let the demand drive the adjustment rather than changing nutrition simply because the training block has a different label.
