Struggling with your Deficit?

Guest Post: Matilda Ramos

We've all had those moments during our dieting phase (especially me) where the temptation to give our diet the flick and order Uber eats is stronger than the discomfort of sitting with the feeling of hunger.

Adherence can be tough. But that’s why everyone that walks around doesn’t have an instance physique! Self-discipline is a priceless thing that money can’t buy.

Here are a few points that have helped me get through a deficit.

1) Realising that your hunger is not a threat

It is completely normal to feel hungry in a deficit. After all, it's your body fighting for its old self!

Embrace the feeling of hunger. It's not a threat that needs to be immediately exterminated - if you're hungry, it means fat loss is occurring!

2) Remember Why You Started

When times get tough, return to your 'why' and what keeping the promise you made to yourself will do for your physique and confidence!

3) Make sure you're filling yourself up with high-volume foods

Fill your plate with veggies, consume lean protein with each meal, space your meals out evenly throughout the day and drink lots of water! This is setting yourself up for success.

4) Aim for progress, not perfection!

This one's a cliche, but it's so true. One meal untracked or off-plan does not mean that you've failed!! The number of times I have eaten outside my macros during a deficit is a lot! You've only failed when you give up.

Instead of adopting an 'all or nothing mentality', understand that:

  • Each day is a continuum of the next - calories do not simply erase and reset on Monday.

  • Know that you can always have some food you crave. Just because you can, it doesn't mean you always should as it may perpetuate more cravings. Still, knowing that you can fit something you want into your macros while dieting can liberate and remove the 'all or nothing' mentality.

5) Know that it's not forever!

This is just a small period of time that you've committed to. The deficit is not forever.

Rather than reset the process of contest prep, I would embrace and even enjoy the process of a deficit and how structured and on track with my goals it made me feel. There's something great about feeling lighter, less inflamed and more mobile!

You may even grow a preference for black coffee ;)
